Heartfelt Farewell: East Main Pays Tribute to Retiring Preacher Wayne Lankford and His Enduring Influence

On Sunday, April 27th, East Main held a heartwarming celebration to honor Wayne Lankford, our preacher of 28 years, upon his retirement. The event was filled with laughter, fond memories, and deep expressions of gratitude for Wayne’s dedicated service and the impact he and his late wife, Rita, had on the congregation.

Speakers included current and past elders, as well as ministers Jon Mitchell and Seth Ferguson. They fondly recalled Wayne’s calm and steady presence, often contrasted with Rita’s more spirited nature, sharing lighthearted anecdotes that highlighted their loving dynamic. Memories spanned decades, from PTP trips to fishing and dove hunting excursions, painting a picture of Wayne’s involvement and connection with the church family beyond his formal roles.

A recurring theme throughout the tributes was Wayne’s profound influence as a teacher. His emphasis on personal Bible study (“Study for yourself. Take the time”) and the importance of context (“Keep it in the context”) resonated deeply with many, becoming guiding principles in their own faith journeys. Several individuals shared specific instances where Wayne’s insightful guidance and unwavering commitment to biblical truth had a significant impact on their lives, offering clarity on scripture and providing steadfast support during challenging times.

Wayne’s role as a song leader was also celebrated, with many remembering his enthusiastic participation, particularly during Vacation Bible School (did you know he could rap?) and his tradition of leading the final song of Wednesday night singings. His ability to lead with both conviction and joy was a cherished aspect of the worship experience at East Main.

The legacy Wayne built alongside his beloved wife, Rita, was also honored. Their partnership was seen as integral to the positive influence they had on the church community.

Jon Mitchell, East Main’s current pulpit minister, expressed deep appreciation for Wayne’s graciousness and support during the transition, emphasizing the strong foundation Wayne had laid and his commitment to unity within the church.

In closing, the celebration underscored the deep love and respect the East Main congregation holds for Wayne Lankford. His 28 years of unwavering service, his dedication to teaching and leading, and the loving partnership he shared with Rita have left an indelible mark on the church family, a legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come.
